Dr Matt Holmes
Matt grew up in Adelaide where he completed a Bachelor of Science with a double major in Anatomy and Physiology in 1996. He then spent the next year undertaking an Honours project investigating assisted reproductive techniques in endangered marsupials, and graduated with First Class Honours. At that time, South Australia did not have a Veterinary Science school, so Matt emigrated to the Sunshine State to undertake a Bachelor of Veterinary Science at the University of Queensland, which he graduated in 2002.
After graduating, Matt was lucky enough to gain a Small Animal Surgery Internship position at Queensland Veterinary Specialists in Brisbane, where he was taught by Dr Richard Eaton-Wells, Dr Richard Mitchell and Dr Maurine Thomson. In 2005, Matt travelled to the UK where he worked for 2 years as a small animal general practitioner with a special interest in surgery.
After arriving home in Australia in 2007, Matt became an associate veterinarian at North Lakes Veterinary Hospital where he had a large and varied surgery caseload, including referrals from other veterinary practitioners. In his “spare time”, Matt also performed surgery on an ad hoc basis at other general practices across Brisbane.
Matt continues to expand his surgery skills and education by undertaking hands on surgery courses and is accredited to perform radiographs for the PennHIP hip score scheme. Matt is the Director of Small Animal Surgery which is dedicated to providing surgery support to general veterinary practitioners across the South East of Queensland.
“Dr Matt Holmes has provided an excellent surgical service for our more difficult orthopaedic and soft tissue patients. In addition to these skills, Dr Matt provides excellent follow up and post-operative care advice in a very timely fashion. Always the consummate professional, Dr Matt is affable, friendly and a very easy person with whom to work. We at the Brighton Veterinary Surgery have no hesitations in recommending Dr Matt’s services to any veterinary practice requiring skilled, prompt and professional attention to their surgical cases.”

“We have had the pleasure of contracting out all of our more involved orthopaedic work to Matt for the last 5 years and have had consistently excellent results. Matt is an excellent surgeon who is very helpful and approachable, and having also worked in general practice for years is well used to the decision making processes clinics and clients are often faced with. We have enjoyed the ability to keep our patients and cases in house, providing continuity and convenience for our clients and yet still being able to offer them a level of surgical care similar to that offered in referral practices. Matt is passionate about orthopaedics and it shows. He will readily view radiographs, discuss cases and has gone the extra mile for us whenever we have needed it. My only hesitation in recommending Matt, is that I am concerned that as his book gets busier, we won’t be able to see him as often as we would like!”

“I have been using Matt for complicated orthopaedic procedures for the last 6 months, and I can sum up my experience in one word – excellent! Whilst I enjoy surgery and don’t shy away from a challenge, I have found that drawing on someone with Matt’s level of expertise allows me to concentrate on what I do best, safe in the knowledge that my patients are having their more complex orthopaedic procedures carried out by someone who performs these surgeries every day of the week, thereby ensuring an optimal patient outcome. Matts’ genuine caring nature, attention to detail, surgical results and attention to intra- and post-operative pain relief have in EVERY instance resulted in happy patients and very satisfied owners, who have ALL made special mention of just how impressed they were with his services. Personally I wish Matt every success, however from a business point of view, I am reluctant to recommend him as once the word gets out, I worry he will become too busy to pop up and take care of my more difficult cases! Great vet, great bloke and a fantastic professional service in every respect.”
